The Vegan Leather // Sneaky Pete's // 14th May

Hot on the heels of their latest release, I speak American, The Vegan Leather provide Edinburgh with a glimpse of what lies ahead, as well as the tracks which got them here.

What’s starting to becoming tradition, the night in Sneakys kicks off with locals Lost in Vancouver. Despite a few technical glitches, they performed a solid set - with highlight being latest single, Pinot Noir. As catchy a number as We Are Scientists have written, it’s a clear statement of intent from this band, and surely a nod to future releases. (For a full write up, check out our Glass Caves review.)

The Vegan Leather have been making big waves over the past 12 months, with a stream of infectious singles and relentless touring. In preparation for The Great Escape in Brighton, TVL treated Edinburgh to an indie/pop/synth masterclass.

Diving straight into Knife and personal favourite Shake It. A delicious slice of indie-pop, which has me chanting “Shake, Shake It, Shake Now” as the song builds to a glorious climax. Slap bang in the middle of their set was Holy Ghost, an enchanting slow burner which proved to be a highlight for us. Following on was I Speak American, which feels like their first real attempt at a radio-playlist track - while sounding very much like TVL. Such sentences would normally strike fear into a band and their loyal fan base, but no such problems here. It’s a terrific pop track which will no doubt be the gateway for new fans. After catching the band recently support Phoenix earlier this year, it’s clear to see why they were chosen to support, especially on the funky Eyes.

Despite trying to draw the night to a close with The House, the Sneaky Pete’s crowd just weren’t having any of it. With the standard “one more tune” chants, TVL looked at each other and thought to hell with it, how about early track Days Gone By. Clearly surprised at how everyone still remembers it, before being reminded “its on YouTube mate!”. As it happens, with such an accomplished set, it’ll be difficult for the Edinburgh crowd to forget this evening in a hurry.
