Falkirk band Pleasure heads have had a successful year consolidating themselves as one of the brightest Scottish bands with relentless gigging, including knock-out performances at Stag & Dagger and Tenement Trail.
However, things are about to go up a notch with their long-awaited debut EP Excuse the Filth. It's filled with five genre-hopping tracks, which demonstrates the strength of their song-writing, especially when you consider there's no space for early favourites Concrete Lips or Middle Man, it's a commendable move.
On the eve of it's release we caught up with main vocalist, Euan Purves to discuss the EP and all things Pleasure Heads...
After a steady release of singles, you buzzing to finally get the EP out there?
We’re beyond excited to let people hear the full record, it feels like we’ve been sitting on it for a while. We recorded over the summer with the dream team that is Chris Marshall and Johnny Madden at 7 West Studios.
The tracklisting consists of some staples of our live set, as well as an older song we've revisited, and the result is a record that we are extremely proud of.
With tracks like Down and Out, it's clear at the core of the band has a working class, punk heart; Do you believe it's important for bands to highlight relatable social issues?
Personally I think music is an excellent platform for putting ideas across and I strive to marry melody and meaning in our songs. In general, as long as people are writing about topics that they feel strongly about, they shouldn't feel obliged to comment on society at all.
Whenever we've caught up with you, there's always someone heading for a night shift! How do you find work/band lifestyle?
It can be difficult to balance the various spinning plates; there's a lot of rushing straight from work to gigs and vice versa. At the minute though, the band takes absolute precedent and our day jobs are simply means to fund doing what we enjoy: playing shows and making music.
You've played predominately in Scotland throughout 2018, do you see yourself touring further afield next year?
Apart from a couple of gigs in London during the summer, we haven't played any gigs south of the border which is something we definitely want to amend next year. The plan's to play as much as possible, in as many different cities as possible.
Favourite song to play live?
Concrete Lips is still a strong favourite for playing live, it always get a strong reaction with plenty of people singing along.
Are you still relied upon to be someone's Middle Man?
The days of jumps-ins are behind us, but its nice to wallow in nostalgia from time to time.
Pleasure Heads finish the year off in style with their EP launch party at the Priory Bar on 7th December! [Tickets]
