Like lockdown and wine, hangovers and Irn-bru - some things are just meant to be together - but what about Folk and Electronica? That’s a combination Paisley-based duo, DRIFT, are putting to the test as they release their first track of 2020, Lifeline.
From first listen Lifeline is a resounding success, which only enhances and leaves a lasting impression with every repeat play (which i’ve been doing for days!).
The track itself opens with an eerie, atmospheric, almost sci-fi film score feel - it conjures up images of an opening scene, as the camera pans around a long-since abandoned space station, with earth looming behind. This is soon accompanied by a slow electronic dub as Linzi Clark’s graceful vocals take centre stage, giving Lifeline a deeply human feeling, in contrast to the other worldly vibes. As the song progress you hear distinct influences from the likes of Daft Punk’s epic Tron Soundtrack, while possessing all the heart of an Elyan Esso track.
The chorus itself is not only a glorious mixing pot of electro-pop, but it also feels like a major milestone for the duo, with Andrew Quinn’s debuting his impressive set of lungs, as Linzi states:
“Lifeline was also the first glimpse of Andrew’s incredible vocals too, I love performing it live with his harmony on the chorus, the first time we performed it, it felt like a moment of really coming together as a duo for the first time.”
This sense of freedom from Andrew, to let go and express his vocal side, really encapsulates the soul of this track. Taking chances and living in the moment, without doubt or fear.
We expect to be hearing a lot more from duo throughout 2020, in particular Andrew and Linzi’s glorious harmonies, and fingers crossed we get to witness their captivating live show before the year is out.
With no gigs on the horizon, please do what you can do support local bands, whether it be buying merch, music or just streaming the hell out of their tracks. Once gigs are back on the table, get filling those venues!
