It's that time again, time for local fans to pack out local venues as This Feeling host their regular live music night. After a successful Friday through in Glasgow, it was Edinburgh's turn to check out some of the best Scottish talent.
Kicking off the night were Echo Moon, a Glasgow based 5-piece with their unique mix of progressive, psychedelic rock. It’s not often you hear a band pack such a massive sound to an intimate club venue, these tracks are ready-made arena anthems!
Stand out track ‘Crystal Skies’ gorgeously builds for close to 7 mins before a crashing crescendo gives lead vocalist, Jordan Reid free reign to let loose - I could easily have listened to them all night. They’e been a little quiet lately, however the set was packed with new tunes ready to be unleashed to the masses.
Recently featuring as ‘Ones to Watch in 2019’ - Black Dove are a young indie band making waves - tonight we found out why!
The boys are a tight outfit with age-defying stage presence and in Josh Cunningham they have a confident frontman with swagger and a pitch-perfect vocal. Throughout the 25 min set the 4-piece mix it up from the jovial and feel-good pop of ‘Fake Id’ to the heavier riff-packed ‘Call You Up’.
Worth a mention: Big up to the Mums! It’s great to see supportive parents repping with Black Dove tees then pitching in as roadies, they must travel the length and breadth of Scotland for the boys. Respect!
Making the trip all the way from Leith (like myself) were Felix and The Sunsets who put on a special performance. Opening with new single ‘Deja Vu’, the 3-piece wasted no time with an onslaught of inspired garage-rock.
It was obvious to anyone in the crowd that these guys were ultra-talented musicians, the set was littered with face-melting solos and relentless drumming at the heart of each track. The sheer noise generated and powerful nature of the performance was very reminiscent of bands like Drenge or Yak. It was our first time catching the local 3-piece, it certainly won’t be the last.
There was a buzz around Sneaky’s as The Van T’s were setting up, with the crowd eager to hear their favourite fuzzy-rock Glasweigans. Setting the party tone from the off, they arrive on stage to Eric Pyrdz’s dance classic ‘Call on Me’ and kick straight into their distorted-guitar rock.
The set was filled with a blend of old and new, with latest track ‘Suis-je cool?’ getting the biggest reception. We also caught a glimpse into the future with next single ‘Control’ - a typically raw garage-rock sound we’ve come to expect.
As they smashed through the curfew and with feedback reverbing, the crowd whipped up chants of “one more tune” but alas, time was against them. However, I hope a set of jump leads were found to resuscitate Shuan's car!
With gigs at Bellahouston Park with the Foo Fighters and a slot at this years Electric Fields already in the diary, it’s shaping up to be a thoroughly deserved breakthrough year!
Safe to say another successful night of live music thanks to the fantastic bands, This Feeling, and our home from home, Sneaky Pete’s for making it all happen. - DC
