The three band lineup consisted of all Edinburgh-based outfits proving once more that Edinburgh is still a city where musicians can flourish and make a Name.
First up were SPYYN, an intriguing 4-piece, only a few months in existence. Debut single Dirty Disco was a particular highlight with it’s atmospheric, off beat sound reminiscent of early Foals. With their 2nd release, Power, ready to drop later in July and a supporting slot for Lost in Vancouver at the Mash House, they already seem to be gathering pace. With a recent gig supporting Vistas, Motion are another young band with bags of potential. Recent lineup changes means tonight marks the beining of a new chapter, with new member Declan on guitarist and synth. Through the 30mins set they flirt between alt-rock and a psychedelic tinged post-punk sound. Peaking with Myth, a track built with deep, haunting vocals layered upon pounding drums last heard in the late 80s. The future is looking bright, with future releases due soon, including Blurred, a track with rising stars Neon Waltz on the production desk. After releasing their debut EP on Skeleton Records(James Skelly) last year to critical acclaim, grabbing playlist slots on Radio X and BBC. Tonight was a perfect oppurtunity to get a glimpse of new material and witness how Rituals are developing. As it turns out, developing rather well. Strutting on stage fully aware of what kind of band they strive to be. Dressed in dapper suits, with the smoke machine turned to up to 11 creating an eerie atmosphere under the low light and a fedora wearing guitarist to complete the on stage presence. Charasamatic frontman, Ryan Sandison, demands attention from the off, bellowing poetic lyrics with influences ranging from David Bowie to Nick Cave. Midway through we are treated to the pulsating Redeemer, with it’s ghostly keyboard beat interjected by classic guitar solos, clearly captivating the Sneaky’s crowd who were eager for more. The 4-piece then turn their hand to a more melodic, slower paced track, Marionette Moon, with the trademark reverb vocals and a gorgeous chorus. The odds were stacked against This Feeling and Sneaky Pete’s tonight, with Edinburgh basking under the summer sky, TRNSMT dragging music fans west and the World Cup captivating everyone’s attention. However, live music prevailed and This Feeling brought it home!
