This Feeling: Moonlight Zoo // Broadcast // 25th May

Updated: Oct 14, 2018

A big supporter of new music, This Feeling, put on another cracking lineup at Broadcast, the beating heart of Glasgow’s buzzing music scene. The Medicine Priests

First up were west coast indie 4-piece, The Medicine Priests. With a new EP ready to drop, the set was packed with unheard material, adding a more bluesy feel with a 60s psychedelic feel to their indie-rock back catalogue. It’s this such genre hopping which sets TMPs apart from the pack, none-more-so than on latest track Devil Don’t Mind. A toe-tapping old school rock ‘n’ roller. Intertwined with their new material, were tracks from their debut EP Cure for Anxiety such as On & On - a pop gem made for a sunny Scottish day. The set highlight, Someone Special, is potentially TMPs finest moment, with a delightful melody and lyrics full of heart. Keep your eyes peeled for that new EP!

Bute

Next up were Welsh indie-rock band Bute, who made the impressive trip for their first ever Scottish gig. Despite only forming less than 12 months ago, they seem to be picking up momentum at an alarming rate, already bagging a headline slot at a local This Feeling gig in Cardiff. Straight from the off, you can see why - with attitude, energy and belting tracks. With little released material, the crowd were keen to hear what Bute were about - they didn’t disappoint, providing a hard, punchy alternative to tonight's lineup. Debut single (and recent Track of the Day at Mockit) Can You Hear Me Now? generated the most buzz. Opening with Jon Green’s pounding drums, which don’t let up for the entirety - a call back to lost indie anthems, while bringing a fresh approach. With future releases and continued touring planned for the rest of 2018, you can’t imagine it being long until Bute are headlining on the This Feeling circuit.

The Capollos

Aberdeen 4-piece, The Capollos, brought the noise with their raw indie sound, and a few local Aberdonians. The band seem a tight outfit, with twin brothers, Kyle and Lloyd sharing lead vocals on latest track Lay Your Love, encouraging each other throughout the track. Live favourites Get Out (out) and Yours, Now, Forever were warmly welcomed. With a steady release of material, The Capollos are no doubt ready to let rip with their first LP, let’s hope the wait is short.

Moonlight Zoo

Headliners Moonlight Zoo have been quiet over the past year, with their last release coming in 2016, but on tonight’s showing they’ve been busy recording and ready to unleash. Here they showcase both new and familiar, like Melting, a sugary indie-pop vibe with contrasting lyrics suggesting the end of the world is nigh! It’s an infectious track which gets the crowd moving. Despite the impressive musicianship on show, what is immediate with MZ are the harmonies and wide vocal range shared throughout the band. With the best example being Breaking or Broken - soaring vocals over a backdrop of power guitars. On first viewing, new songs sound like they could give the 1975 a run for their money - hopefully we get a release before the summer is out!
