Something of an under-ground sensation, The Snuts have managed to build a loyal following with little radio play, barely any marketing to speak off and only a handful of demos plus two proper releases.
Yet, over the past weekend the bucky-drinking 4-piece have just performed arguably the most talked about Scottish tour dates of the year, playing to sold out venues in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. We were lucky enough to catch them at the first date in Edinburgh’s La Belle Angele!
Opening with the massive Matador and announcing to anyone unaware “We’re The fucking Snuts!” - what followed was 40 mins of sweat-drenched mayhem. New tracks Manhattan Project and Seasons were rolled out early and went down a storm. Seemingly getting the seal of approval as the words were belted back with similar gusto to popular tracks like Glasgow.
Lead singer Jack Cochrane was on top form, cutting a commanding figure, full of attitude akin to Liam G (substitute tambourine for guitar). His versatile vocals are one of the factors which sets The Snuts apart, most notably on final track and live favourite Sing For Your Supper. The place erupted in unison as the set drew to a close.
It’s clear these boys write tracks which resonate with their home-grown boisterous and loyal fan base. However, they’re now faced with the same challenge as other Scottish bands before them; breaking the UK mainstream. Some have made it, others not so, but with time on their side to develop and define their style, you’d be a fool to bet against them.
Not just content on selling out their three Scottish dates and performing to big crowds during festival appearances at TRNSMT, Reading, Leeds and Benicassim, eagle-eyed fans would have noticed posters advertising another Glasgow gig on the 29th of Dec. It’ll no doubt be another sell-out, the icing on the cake to what’s been a fantastic year for these indie rogues.
