Last year The Bright Skies burst on to the Scottish scene with their Church Street EP, a collection of tracks from early demos, it was raw but suggested there was plenty to get excited about. Two further releases Side Effect and most recently In Colour, show they are starting to fulfill this early promise.
Ahead of a co-headline tour with fellow indie pals The Capollos, we caught up with front man Liam Mclennan...
Q. For those new to The Bright Skies, who makes up the band ?
Liam McLennan is the lead man, Kallan Glynn on lead guitar, Calum Gray on bass and Blair Russel-Simpson on the pots and pans
Q. You buzzing to get back on the road?
Absolutely ecstatic to kick the tour off tomorrow especially with The Capollos, they’re smashing, a band we really admire
Q. What should we expect from the tour?
We’ll have a couple new ones, a couple old ones. Just gonna have to wait and see!
Q. How did the joint tour with The Capollos come about?
We actually featured them on our TBS Beats playlist then got in touch to see if they wanted to play an Aberdeen gig so that we could get our name out there up there and it just escalated into a tour haha!
Q. Your first release of 2018 arrived in the form of ‘In Colour’ - Tell us a bit about this track.
We had the idea for a long time. Kallan and I were messing around in his looking for something to run with and we got the initial riff and melody, I went away and wrote the lyrics that are actually about my girlfriend Megan, I reckon she’s pretty chuffed with it.
We then went and recorded a demo with Sam from @retrovideoclub then went to record the final version with Mark Morrow who’s done 2 tracks for us now, couldn’t recommend him highly enough!
Q. How does the songwriting process work within TBS? Differ from track to track?
Kallan and I just see whatever we have and then we’ll come together and see if we can get something funky out of it, if we can we can if we can’t, we can’t no big deal, we don’t like to force songs out, better when they flow
Q. Current Scottish bands who inspire you?
We love RVC and Vistas, great pals of ours. Recently though I’ve been dead into @patersanimusic and I know Kallan is a big fan of @nasariband
Q. As a band with a few top releases behind them, what advice would you give kids at school looking to start a band?
We would just say keep at it, pick up an instrument whatever it is. Write songs about anything and everything. The more you do the better you get, literally our advice is keep going, don’t give up when the going gets tough, that’s what makes or breaks you
Q. Plans for new EP?
I don’t think an EP isn’t on the cards at the moment I think we’re gonna have a single release or two before we think about that.
Q. 2019, World domination?
