The Loveless boys emerge on stage clad in self branded Drenge boilers suits, the Glasgow crowd is buzzing. I think we are in for a treat.
My first encounter with the band was way back in 2013 at Edinburgh’s now defunct Electric Circus, the lads have evolved since then; musically and on stage as they are now a ‘touring’ four piece. The Four effect is clear from the opening note of new number Bonfire.
We continue down the raw and energetic musical road with debut album favourites Dogmeat, Backwaters and Nothing which gets the crowd dancing and moshing. A massive smile on guitarist and vocalist Eoin’s face lights up the darkened room as a mass mosh pit explodes. Brother and drummer Rory’s energetic smashing of the drums is something to behold, the crowd erupts again to We Can Do What We Want from 2015’s follow up album Undertow.
It is hard to believe that Drenge haven’t been in our lives for three years, judging by the new tunes on show to tonight though it has definitely been worth the wait. New Single This Dance is another classic waiting to happen, and the rest of the new ones fit in nicely with the back catalogue.
Drenge live are primal, the music is raw and packs a punch. The loveless boys have grown in confidence, this is evident as Eoin dances around stage all night while having banter about the Glasgow underground (I now also want to know why a return ticket is 10p cheaper than a single on the underground).
As the gig draws to a close we are gifted with moment of the night. Eoin trods out with his acoustic guitar under one arm and we are treated to a Glaswegian singalong of Fuckabout. A perfect end to the night. Drenge are definitely one to write home about.
